Best Ping Pong Robots 2020

Practice footwork, drill in some cool techniques, learn how to return specific types of shots with the best ping pong robot. While it won’t take your game to the next level, you can easily get practice strokes and get some cardio done.

This guide is only for affordable models and not the most high-end ones. Let’s assume that you want a more budget-friendly option like the Newgy models. These robots will shoot the balls out with sufficient spin.

It’s enough to let you experience topspin and underspin and also to learn how to counter against those specific strokes.

Maybe you want to get a feel for how to loop an underspin shot. Practicing with the best ping pong robots can help you get the principles down. This way, you will be better prepared for the club play.

You want to get all the advantages you can get. On top of that, you can develop accuracy and work on cardio for general fitness. They also help a great amount on footwork.

In addition to that, you can practice against a certain type of spin in a consistent loop. It’s worth investing in the best ping pong training robots if you plan on using them in conjunction with club practice and have established strokes.

However, there is a slight drawback. The speed will determine the amount of spin the ball has. In a real-life practice session, you don’t get a fast-low spin ball or a slow spinny ball.

Some models will allow you to program the robot to alternate between spins. Those are models that you should definitely buy.

If you want to go all-out, go with the Butterfly Amicus. It’s one hell of a beast. It won’t replace a human partner, but it’s the next best thing. It’s also the most reliable with the most customization option.

Best Budget Table Tennis Robot

If you want to stay under $1000, go with the Newgy Robopong 2055. It’s the updated version of 2050.

On the other hand, if you have a bit of cash to spare, opt for the new Robopong 3050. It’s a pretty awesome training robot since it now uses two wheels but expensive.

If you want to save more, go with a Newgy 1055 and add in a cheap 40$-ish net and with a little bit of DIY magic (it’s really simple btw), you can turn a Newgy 1055 into 2055.

Newgy robots hold up well, and they are also a lot more programmable, which makes them hugely useful for players that want to develop their skills.

The main reason why you would want to pick this one is because of the footwork drills. There are lots of drills pre-programmed and lots of customizability options. Also, all the kinks and bugs have been worked out, which means the robot will work indefinitely.

There are a few tabletop robots on the market that are great for practicing at home. Obviously, these small ones aren’t very expensive. If you don’t have the budget for the bigger standalone’s, you might want to look at what iPong has to offer.

For a recreational player, it doesn’t make any sense to spend 2000$ on a high-end robot like the Amicus. However, the 200-300-dollar range is worth it. It’s slightly above what the iPong robot would cost, but they are better in every way.

It comes with a remote control to adjust the settings like stimulating all different types of spin while you are playing. And these robots are incredibly easy to setup.

If you are looking for something in the 100$ range, don’t bother buying one. Cheap training robots are only good for footwork drills. If I were you, I definitely wouldn’t bother.

Finding The Best Table Tennis Robot – A Definitive Buyer’s Guide

Should I get a TT Robot?

It depends.

1. Are you looking for a workout?

2. Do you want to use the robot to work on specific drills?

3. Do you need to improve your skill in the backhand, topspin, etc.?

If this is you, then investing in a TT robot makes sense. Make sure to mix in some real play sessions. Let’s talk more about that in the following section.

Why You Should & Shouldn’t Buy Table Tennis Robots

Ping pong training robots may not be the best practice partner, but they have their uses. For solo practice, and if you don’t have a partner to play with you all the time, consider getting a good table tennis robot.

The only reason why it isn’t considered that useful is that it’s super important to practice anticipating the opposing player and make minute adjustments. While some high-end robots will allow you to do that, but those don’t come cheap.

A table tennis training robot can be considered a good warmup before your actual match. Keep in mind that a robot will feed the ball very accurately, which isn’t the case in a real-life match.

If you are still in the stage of training and only getting your form down, I would suggest you don’t invest in a ping pong robot. Practicing with a robot now will run the risk of reinforcing bad technique.

Another drawback is that you won’t learn how to detect body movements or learn how to read spin that will lead to a certain angle and technique. A quality defender can vary the spin, and that’s where you will get stuck.

This has to be learned by practicing with an actual partner and playing a lot of matches. You can pretty much learn how to return any kind of ball with a practice robot. Puzzling in all the pieces in a real match is the real challenge.

The advantage here is that you can easily drill in a technique. You can learn how to make loop chops all day long by using the backspin setting. After a full day worth of training, you can easily loop back pretty much any chop from players.

If your form is really good, training solo can be a good warmup if a decent partner isn’t available. Also, if you don’t want to head down to the club, investing in a ping pong robot can be a good decision.

Facts About Practicing Solo with A Ping Pong Robot

A decent training robot for ping pong can be very expensive. The ones that are in the sub ~600$ range aren’t that good if you want to develop your skills. However, they are better than nothing if you don’t have any alternatives.

I don’t think they make great investments considering the fact that the utility is limited. Nothing beats having access to a good club and/or coaching. For example, the Newgy 1040 table tennis robot is good for practicing basic strokes.

However, it won’t take more than two minutes to blow through a full bucket of ping pong balls. You will spend more time collecting those balls and refilling the bucket than practicing.

Speaking of collecting balls, why not check out my best table tennis ball picker guide. I’m sure it’ll come handy when you are training solo.

The ball collecting issue is actually fixable. A quick solution is to get a ping pong ball collecting net, which won’t cost more than 40 bucks. This way, you will spend less time fetching and more time reaping the benefits of tuning mechanics.

Speaking of nets, yes, another post recommendation that I recently wrote. Go ahead and check out my best ping pong nets article to see a list of top table tennis table nets.

Now, upgrade to a better model; the Newgy 2040 comes with a net/collector kit. This eliminates the main problem in 1040 had. The 2040 can recycle caught balls, which means you will be able to keep swinging longer.

In terms of skill, you won’t see a huge leap, but practicing regularly will turn an amateur into a semi-pro for sure. So, is it worth investing in a table tennis robot? Yes.

However, your money is better spent on a good ping pong club and getting a coach to help you out. If you have got cash to spare and don’t want to be around people, a decent training robot should a good way to kill some time and get you hitting.

How to Choose the Best Table Tennis Robot?

Some people say that robots are boring. They obviously haven’t tried the best TT robots like the Butterfly Amicus or the Newgy 3050XL. The lower-end models are obviously boring because you can’t do much with them.

The more expensive ones will give you more diverse spin/speed settings, better ball drills, and much more.
